Navasota Brief History

Known as Hollandale, Navasota was named after Francis Holland, who purchased the land in 1822. Many years later, James Nolan, another important figure in the history of Navasota, deeded the area free of charge in 1859. Nolan put up a few tents back in 1848 and built a log cabin in 1852. The log cabin subsequently turned into a stage stop where the Navasota River and La Bahia Road intersected a few years later. In the mid-1850s, the town had four stage line stops, and a post office was established in 1854, the same year that the settlement’s moniker was changed to Navasota. It was anointed after the river which flowed through the area. After then, the Texas and Houston Central Railway was formed, making Navasota a significant marketing and shipping center to the entire state.
